Why purchase this 3 oz Silver Reverse Proof 1933-2021 NPF Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Medal?

The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle has perhaps the most interesting story of any American coin. After striking nearly half a million pieces for circulation, the US Mint had to melt the coins when the U.S. government made private gold ownership illegal. A few coins escaped this fate, including one that auctioned in 2002 for $7,590,000. This medal from Commonwealth Mint, which was created with the help of John Mercanti, celebrates that coin in ultra high relief.

Powerful Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

The designs on both faces of this medal were originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and were recreated for this issue by John Mercanti and other artists at the Commonwealth Mint. Obverse: The obverse design is generally considered the most beautiful design in the history of American numismatics. Liberty stands at the center facing the holder with her torch, a symbol of freedom, in one hand and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in the other. Behind her the rays of the morning sun spread out, making her appear larger than life. Inscriptions on this face include her name, 'LIBERTY,' and the date of the coin being honored on this medal, '1933.'

Reverse: The rays of the sun also serve as the backdrop on the reverse, on which an eagle soars high in the sky. 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'DOUBLE EAGLE' are inscribed at the top of this face, while the national motto, 'IN GOD WE TRUST,' is included near the bottom. Inscriptions on the left collectively read, 'SAINT-GAUDENS NHP 2021.'

Impeccable PF70 FDI with Exclusive Mercanti Signed Label

Former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti hand singed the label on which Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided its grading information. That information includes the company's highest grade, Proof 70, as well as First Day of Issue (FDI) certification. The grade means that the coin appears perfect even under 5x magnification. The FDI designation is only given to pieces that were submitted to NGC through an exclusive process.
