The United States and its allies, France, Britain, and the Soviet Union, closed in on Berlin, Germany, by the spring of 1945. The war officially ended with the Allies taking control of Germany and the capital city of Berlin. Later in 1945, the United States brought the war to an end with its defeat of Imperial Japan, a feat enabled by the first-ever use of atomic weapons. The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 2020-W V75 Privy Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is the image of Walking Liberty. She is featured in the center of the design in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon. There is a commemorative 75th-anniversary privy mark on this side of the coin, along with inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2020.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2020-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin includes the current versions of the US heraldic eagle. Designed in 1986 by John Mercanti, the image shows a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest. One set of talons clutches an olive branch of peace, while the other clutches the arrows of war. The ribbon in its beak reads E Pluribus Unum and the coin has other inscriptions of United States of America, 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
History
The privy mark featured on these coins is designed in the shape of the Rainbow Pool. This fixture of the National Mall in Washington DC was integrated into the design of the World War II Memorial when the latter was completed in 2001. Inside the privy mark is an inscription of V75.
