The allegorical figure of Britannia is believed to have its origins in Roman times when the Roman province of Britannia was personified as a goddess. The concept of a female personification of the island of Britain continued to evolve over the centuries. 

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Britannia began to take on her iconic image, often depicted as a strong and powerful woman wearing a Corinthian helmet, shield, and trident, symbolizing Britain’s naval prowess and strength.

In the obverse design of the 2024 1/4 oz Gold Britannia, the mint features the new bust of King Charles III. This new left-profile relief of His Majesty depicts Charles III without a crown on his head in the opposite orientation to his predecessor, his mother the Late Queen Elizabeth II.
