The Krugerrand gets its name from the combination of Paul Kruger’s last name and the nation’s modern currency, the Rand. Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, commonly known as Paul Kruger or “Oom Paul,” served as President of the South African Republic (Transvaal) from 1883 to 1900. His distinctive bearded profile became one of the most recognizable symbols of South African currency, first appearing on coins of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek in the late 19th century. His stern, patriarchal image represented the independent spirit of the Boer republics and their resistance to British imperialism.
On the obverse side of the 2025 Gold Krugerrand is a detailed bust of Paul Kruger. This iconic design originated in the 1890s when it was first used on South African Pound coins. It showcases Kruger in a left-profile portrait, capturing the likeness of this historic leader who served as a member of the Triumvirate governing the South African Republic.
The reverse of the 2025 1 oz South African Gold Krugerrand displays a graceful Springbok antelope mid-leap. Native to southern Africa, the Springbok is not only an emblem of the region’s rich wildlife but also a proud national symbol of the modern Republic of South Africa.
