For the obverse design of the 2025 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin, the Royal Canadian Mint features the new portrait of King Charles III. Designed in 2024 by Steven Rosati, this new image captures Charles III in left-profile relief without a crown on his head.
In the reverse design of 2025 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins, the mint features its historic sugar maple leaf design. Created in 1979 by Walter Ott, this front-facing image of a natural maple leaf is a beautiful homage to the national emblem that has featured on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf.
When the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979, it was the first gold bullion coin introduced to challenge the South African Gold Krugerrand. The coin was initially offered only in 1 oz gold with a purity level of .999, but in November 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint issued the first of several fractional-ounce versions of the coin and enhanced the purity to 24-karat gold.
